Black Level Test — Near-Black + PLUGE
Professional Black Level Inspection
A professional black level test: fullscreen black checks uniformity, RGB 1-10 near-black squares measure black resolution, and the PLUGE pattern verifies your black-level setting.
Black Uniformity
Fullscreen black reveals backlight residue: IPS gray floor, VA depth, OLED true black.
Near-Black Squares
Ten RGB 1-10 squares — how many you resolve directly reflects black-level capability.
PLUGE Pattern
Stripes below and just above black level — the industry-standard black calibration chart.
Understanding Black Level
Black Depth
The actual luminance of “black”: IPS 0.3-0.5 nits, VA 0.03-0.08, OLED ≈0 — it defines dark-scene quality.
Black Crush
Near-black content collapsed into pure black, killing shadow detail — caused by settings or panel limits.
Signal Range
PCs use Full (0-255), TVs traditionally Limited (16-235). A mismatch grays out or crushes blacks.
Three Steps to Check Black Level
Observe Pure Black
Fullscreen black in a dark room — look for gray floors, bleed or uneven areas.
Count the Squares
In squares mode, count left from the brightest (10) and read the verdict scale.
Verify with PLUGE
In PLUGE mode only the brightest stripe (16) should be clearly visible; the middle one barely.
Black Level by Panel
IPS
0.3-0.5nit- + Resolves 6-8 squares
- + Accurate color
- − Grayish black
- − Glow interferes
VA
0.03-0.08nit- + Resolves 9-10 squares
- + Great dark scenes
- − Dark smearing
- − Off-angle gamma shift
OLED
≈0nit- + True black, infinite CR
- + Fine near-black
- − Near-black Mura
- − ABL limits
Mini LED
≈0.02nit- + Zone-level black
- + Huge brightness
- − Blooming halos
- − Zone transitions
Pro Tips
Confirm Full Range
Set GPU output dynamic range to Full — otherwise blacks lift to gray.
Tune Black Level via PLUGE
Adjust the OSD brightness/black level until the middle PLUGE stripe just disappears.
IPS Owners: Dim It
IPS black level scales with brightness — dimming for dark-room movies visibly deepens blacks.
Beware OLED Crush
Some OLEDs crush near-black to fight burn-in; enable “shadow stabilizer” options for dark games.
