Why You Need This

Why You Need This

Esports specs are often inflated

“1ms” usually means MPRT (strobing), not GtG; “HDR400” may lack local dimming entirely. Measuring is the only truth.

VRR compatibility varies

Even certified G-Sync Compatible units vary: some flicker at low framerates, some lack VRR over HDMI — test with your GPU.

Works for used monitors

For used units, focus on dead pixels, worsened bleed and backlight aging (yellowing on white) — 20 minutes on site.

01

Dead Pixels

Essential

Cycle solid colors, focus on the central zone; photograph locations for warranty claims.

Verdict:≥1 bright or ≥3 dark dots meets most exchange policies.

02

Backlight Bleed

Essential

Check edge bleed on black in a dark room, and separate angle-dependent IPS glow from fixed bleed.

Verdict:Fixed bleed bigger than a coin is real; angle-dependent glow is normal.

Open Tool
03

Resolution & Hz

Essential

Verify native resolution and real refresh; overclock tiers like 165/180Hz need manual enabling and stability checks.

Verdict:If the advertised refresh can’t be enabled or causes artifacts — return it.

Open Tool
04

Color Test

Recommended

Check for oversaturation or casts in the default mode; designers should re-check accuracy in sRGB mode.

Verdict:A cast that persists in sRGB mode despite OSD tuning is a quality issue.

Open Tool
05

Color Gamut

Recommended

Verify rated gamut: 99% sRGB / 95% P3 for design panels; beware the “72% NTSC” wording trick (~sRGB).

Verdict:Gamut far below the listing — keep screenshots and request a return.

Open Tool
06

Ghosting

Recommended

Judge real response from UFO trails; step through Overdrive levels and back off if inverse ghosting appears.

Verdict:Severe VA smear that hurts gameplay is return-worthy.

Open Tool
07

Tearing & VRR

Optional

Verify G-Sync Compatible/FreeSync engages; no tearing in the VRR range and no flicker under LFC.

Verdict:Flicker/black screens with VRR on indicate compatibility issues — firmware update or return.

Open Tool
08

Uniformity

Optional

Use gradients and solids to catch split-tint panels (left/right temp mismatch) and brightness unevenness — critical for design work.

Verdict:Obvious split tint that affects color work is a valid defect.

Key Terms

Key Terms

GtG

True grey-to-grey response; gaming panels should be ≤5ms. Quoted “1ms GtG (typical)” is optimistic.

MPRT

Strobe-based “motion response” that slashes brightness and conflicts with VRR — not the same as GtG.

VRR

Variable refresh (G-Sync/FreeSync) syncs framerate to refresh to kill tearing — mind the range (e.g. 48-144Hz).

Overdrive

OSD level that overvolts pixels for faster response; too high causes overshoot — mid levels usually win.

Static Contrast

IPS ~1000:1, VA ~3000:1, OLED near-infinite. Ignore “dynamic contrast” numbers.

Bit Depth & FRC

Most “10-bit” is 8bit+FRC dithering — fine in practice; native 10-bit is pro-only and needs DisplayPort.

  • Fast and colorful
  • Wide viewing angles
Cons
  • Only 1000:1 contrast
  • IPS glow

VA

Value cinema
Pros
  • 3000:1 contrast
  • Less bleed
Cons
  • Dark-scene smear
  • Mediocre angles

OLED

Flagship
Pros
  • 0.03ms response, true black
  • Superb HDR
Cons
  • Burn-in risk
  • Text fringing

TN

Pro esports
Pros
  • Fastest response
  • Cheap high refresh
Cons
  • Poor color & angles
Return vs Normal

Return vs Normal

Should Return

  • ≥1 bright pixel or ≥3 dark pixels
  • Advertised high refresh can’t be enabled, or artifacts when enabled
  • Persistent flicker or black screens with VRR on
  • Severe VA smear with obvious dark-object trails in games
  • Obvious split tint — left/right halves differ in color temperature

Normal Behavior

  • Corner IPS glow that shifts with angle
  • 1-2Hz refresh fluctuation within the VRR range
  • Overshoot at high Overdrive levels (fixable by lowering)
  • 8bit+FRC dithering when the listing says so
  • Slight brightness unevenness on full white
Testing Environment Tips

Testing Environment Tips

1Test high refresh and VRR over DisplayPort — HDMI versions may lack bandwidth
2Reset the OSD to factory first to clear prior adjustments
3Warm up 30 minutes before judging color
4Dark room for bleed/ghosting; normal light for uniformity
5Compare UFO trails at every Overdrive level and keep the best
6On used monitors, check white for yellowed backlight aging
