Why You Need This

Why You Need This

LCD dominates — and disputes top the list

Bleed, glow and dead pixels top screen after-sales disputes — mostly from mistaking traits for faults or faults for traits.

Knowledge saves money

Return a panel for IPS glow and the replacement will likely match; accept real bleed as “normal” and you eat the loss.

Mini LED is still LCD

Mini LED upgrades the backlight only — the LCD layer’s glow, response and viewing-angle traits remain, as do the rules.

Works for aging screens

Run the flow on a years-old LCD with yellowing, worsening bleed or flicker to decide if it’s still worth keeping.

01

Dead Pixels

Essential

Cycle solid colors for bright/dark pixels — LCD defects are subpixel-scale, so inspect from within 50cm.

Verdict:≥1 bright or ≥3 dark pixels meets exchange policy.

02

Backlight Bleed

Essential

On black in a dark room, look for fixed bleed — real bleed has clear boundaries and doesn’t move with your head.

Verdict:Fixed bleed larger than a coin is a quality defect.

03

IPS Glow Check

Essential

Corner whitening that shifts as you move your head is IPS glow — a physics trait no replacement will fix. Don’t confuse it with bleed.

Verdict:Moves with angle = glow (normal); fixed = bleed (returnable).

Open Tool
04

Contrast

Recommended

Checkerboards and grey steps verify static contrast: IPS ~1000:1, VA should look clearly deeper (3000:1+).

Verdict:VA blacks looking as grey as IPS suggest backlight or batch issues.

Open Tool
05

Greyscale

Recommended

Check grey gradation and shadow detail — VA gamma shift off-axis makes shadow detail wash out from the side.

Verdict:Crushed shadows head-on that settings can’t fix is a defect.

Open Tool
06

Overdrive & Ghosting

Recommended

Judge true response from UFO trails and step through Overdrive — 60Hz office panels needn’t worry; gaming LCDs must.

Verdict:Heavy text smearing in everyday scrolling is return-worthy.

Open Tool
07

Uniformity & DSE

Optional

Mid grey and gradients reveal cloudy DSE and split tint — all big LCDs have some; severity is the question.

Verdict:Clouds or split tint clearly visible at normal distance justify exchange.

Open Tool
08

Color Temp

Optional

Judge white point: standard 6500K is mildly warm; strong yellow/blue means poor factory calibration. Compare left vs right halves.

Verdict:A strong cast that OSD presets can’t correct is returnable.

Key Terms

Key Terms

IPS Glow

An IPS optical trait: corner whitening on dark scenes that shifts with angle. No replacement removes it — only degree varies.

DSE

Cloudy mura on large flat colors, from light-guide/diffuser manufacturing — more common on big panels.

Backlight Uniformity

Brightness consistency across the screen; good panels vary <10%. Edge falloff is a side-lit physical limit.

Overdrive

Overvolting liquid crystals for faster response; too high causes overshoot — find the balanced level.

Static Contrast

Ratio of whitest to blackest on one screen: IPS ~1000:1, VA ~3000:1, TN ~700:1 — the root of LCD black levels.

DC vs PWM Dimming

DC dims voltage directly with no flicker; PWM switches the backlight — low frequencies (<1000Hz) strain eyes.

Panel Technology Compared

IPS

Color pick
Pros
  • Accurate, wide angles
  • Fairly fast
Cons
  • Low contrast, glow
  • Bleed more common

VA

Contrast pick
Pros
  • 3000:1 deep blacks
  • Less bleed
Cons
  • Dark-scene smear
  • Off-axis gamma shift

TN

Fast & cheap
Pros
  • Fastest response
  • Cheap
Cons
  • Washed color, bad angles

Mini LED LCD

Premium BLU
Pros
  • Zoned dimming, bright
  • No burn-in
Cons
  • Some blooming
  • LCD traits remain
Return vs Normal

Return vs Normal

Should Return

  • True fixed bleed: angle-independent, larger than a coin
  • ≥1 bright or ≥3 dead pixels
  • Severe DSE clouds clearly visible at normal distance
  • Irregular backlight flicker unrelated to PWM — often a failing backlight
  • Strong full-screen cast that OSD can’t correct
  • Bright lines or dark bands (fixed vertical/horizontal)

Normal Behavior

  • Corner IPS glow that shifts with angle
  • Mild color-temperature unevenness across halves
  • VA off-axis gamma shift and washed shadows
  • Contrast drop viewed off-angle (universal to LCD)
  • Slight edge brightness falloff (edge-lit backlight)
  • Brief ripples when pressing the panel (don’t press hard)
Testing Environment Tips

Testing Environment Tips

1Dark room for bleed/glow; phone cameras exaggerate — trust your eyes
2100% brightness for bleed; everyday brightness for uniformity
3Warm up 30 minutes before judging color and temperature
4Move your head side to side to confirm glow shifts with angle
5Disable dynamic contrast/eco — they interfere with solid-color tests
6Judge DSE from normal distance — up close, every panel has flaws
