Why You Need This

Why You Need This

The panel lottery is real

The same laptop model often ships with BOE, AUO or LG panels differing in gamut, brightness and uniformity — without testing, you might keep the worst one.

The 7-day window is short

Most no-questions return windows last just 7 days and shrink once activated. A 20-minute test on day one leaves room to act.

Works for used laptops too

Run the same 8 steps during a second-hand deal to expose dead pixels, swapped panels and color casts.

Zero install, zero cost

Every test runs in the browser — nothing to install — and you can export a PDF report as evidence.

01

Dead Pixels

Essential

Cycle full-screen black/white/red/green/blue and scan for stuck bright or dead dark pixels in a dark room.

Verdict:≥1 bright dot or ≥3 dark dots meets most brands’ return policy.

02

Backlight Bleed

Essential

On a full-black image at max brightness in the dark, check corners and edges for fixed bright patches.

Verdict:Fixed bleed larger than a coin that doesn’t shift with viewing angle — return it.

Open Tool
03

Resolution Check

Essential

Verify physical/logical resolution and DPR match the listing — beware overstated “high-res” claims.

Verdict:Physical resolution below spec (e.g. “2.8K” that’s really 1080p) is misrepresentation — return.

Open Tool
04

Color Test

Recommended

Check solid colors and transitions for a cast (yellow/green tint) that color-temperature settings can’t fix.

Verdict:A strong uncorrectable cast justifies a return.

Open Tool
05

Color Gamut

Recommended

Use wide-gamut patterns to see whether the panel truly hits its rated 100% sRGB; compare 45% NTSC budget panels against the marketing page.

Verdict:If measured gamut falls far below advertised coverage, return it.

Open Tool
06

Greyscale

Recommended

Confirm all 16 grey steps are distinguishable — shadows shouldn’t crush, highlights shouldn’t clip.

Verdict:More than 3 indistinguishable dark steps after adjustment indicates a quality issue.

Open Tool
07

Refresh Rate

Optional

Measure the real refresh rate and confirm high-refresh models genuinely run at 120/144Hz.

Verdict:A panel stuck at 60Hz despite a high-refresh spec is a missing feature.

Open Tool
08

Ghosting

Optional

Watch trailing behind fast-moving blocks to judge whether response time hurts scrolling or gaming.

Verdict:Obvious smearing in everyday scrolling is return-worthy.

Key Terms

Key Terms

Resolution

Physical pixel count, e.g. 1920×1080 (FHD). Higher is sharper, but watch usable space after scaling.

sRGB Coverage

Percentage of the sRGB gamut the panel reproduces. Aim ≥99% for design work; budget panels often do 45% NTSC (~62% sRGB).

ΔE Accuracy

How far colors deviate from reference. ΔE<2 is invisible to the eye; >5 is an obvious cast. Factory-calibrated models quote average ΔE.

Refresh Rate

Screen updates per second (Hz). 60Hz is fine; 120Hz+ makes scrolling and games visibly smoother.

Response Time

Milliseconds for a pixel to change color (GtG). Slow values cause ghosting; gaming panels should be ≤5ms.

Brightness

Measured in nits. 300 nits suits indoor use; 400+ recommended near windows or outdoors.

Return vs Normal

Return vs Normal

Should Return

  • Any single bright (stuck) pixel
  • ≥3 dead pixels, or any two adjacent defects within 15mm
  • Fixed backlight bleed larger than a coin
  • A cluster of dead pixels in the central A/B/C zones
  • Suspected panel swap: scratched screws and a panel model that doesn’t match factory records
  • A strong yellow/green cast that color-temperature settings can’t correct

Normal Behavior

  • Mild corner IPS glow on black that shifts with viewing angle
  • 45% NTSC gamut on budget models when advertised as such
  • Slight brightness non-uniformity on large flat colors
  • Low-frequency PWM at low brightness (sensitive users should pick DC/high-freq models)
  • Minor brightness fluctuation near vents under heavy load
Testing Environment Tips

Testing Environment Tips

1Test in a dark room — bleed and dead pixels show up best
2Set brightness to 100% for bleed and gamut tests
3Warm up 15 minutes so backlight and color stabilize
4Clean the screen first — dust masquerades as dead pixels
5Disable night light / eye-care modes and auto color temperature
6Judge at your normal 50-70cm viewing distance
