Screen Flicker Test
Point your phone camera at the gray blocks: rolling bright/dark bands = PWM flicker. Fewer, thicker bands = lower frequency.
- 1.Open your phone camera Pro mode
- 2.Set shutter to 1/4000s
- 3.Aim at the gray blocks
- 4.Count rolling bands and their width
Wave a pen quickly in front of the white block: separate phantom pens = flicker; smooth continuous trail = near DC.
- <250Hz — risky, sensitive users avoid
- 250-1000Hz — fair, fatigue over time
- 1-2kHz — good
- >2kHz / DC — imperceptible (TÜV line)

Five gray levels
10/25/50/75/100% blocks on one screen — PWM shows worst at low brightness.

What Is Flicker?
PWM dimming
Brightness via rapid backlight on/off. Low frequency causes eye strain for sensitive users.
DC dimming
Direct current control, flicker-free, though OLED may shift color at low brightness.
Sensitive group
About 10% of people react to low-frequency PWM with dry eyes, headaches and fatigue.
How to Use
Go fullscreen
Click the canvas to show five gray levels fullscreen.
Aim your camera
Phone Pro mode, shutter 1/4000s, watch for rolling bands.
Read the scale
Few thick bands = low-frequency PWM; nearly none = high frequency or DC.
Dimming by Screen Type
LCD monitors
Mostly high-freq/DC
- + Usually imperceptible
- + TÜV common
- − Budget models still low-freq
OLED phones
240-480Hz typical
- + New models 1440-2160Hz
- − Older low-freq strains eyes
OLED TV/monitor
Near DC
- + Low modulation depth
- − ABL brightness shifts
E-Ink
Zero flicker
- + No flicker at all
- + Best for eyes
- − Slow refresh
- − Niche use
Reduce Flicker Impact
Raise brightness above 50% — many PWM panels behave like DC at high levels.
Choose TÜV Flicker-Free certified or 2000Hz+ PWM devices.
Sensitive users should avoid dim OLED phones in dark rooms.
Disable dynamic contrast and auto-brightness in the monitor OSD.

Test Environment
- Use camera Pro/manual mode
- Shutter at least 1/2000s, ideally 1/4000s
- Test at both 100% and 30% brightness
- Keep the camera steady, avoid digital zoom
