PPI Basics

PPI formula

PPI = √(w²+h²) ÷ diagonal inches — the core pixel density metric.

Retina distance

Apple threshold where pixels become indistinguishable at normal distance — ~110+ PPI at desk.

Scaling match

High-PPI screens need OS scaling: 163 PPI → 150%, 218 PPI → 200%.

Buying Advice

At 60-70cm desk distance, 90-140 PPI balances price and sharpness.

Choose 3440×1440 ultrawides; 2560×1080 has visibly low PPI.

TV size by distance: 55" for 2-2.5m, 65" for 2.5-3m.

Prefer higher resolution at the same size — scaling beats native low-res.

FAQ

Calculation Notes

  • Physical size = active area, bezels excluded
  • Area computed as rectangle; curved differs slightly
  • PPI is native panel value, independent of scaling
  • Comparison persists for the session only
