Screen Tearing Test
- 48-60Hz — entry FreeSync
- 48-144Hz — mainstream sweet spot
- 1-360Hz G-Sync Ultimate — flagship
- LFC — smooth below the floor
A wandering horizontal split in the moving stripes = tearing. Browsers are usually compositor-synced — verify in-game if in doubt.
Professional Tearing Test
Fast vertical stripes
Black/white stripes moving at high speed make tear lines instantly visible as stripe offsets.
Adjustable speed
Three speed tiers covering video, scrolling and fast camera pans.
VRR guidance
Built-in FreeSync/G-Sync range reference to judge whether variable refresh is active.
What Is Tearing?
Cause
The GPU swaps frames mid-refresh: the top of the screen shows the old frame, the bottom the new one.
VSync
Locks frame delivery to refresh, eliminating tearing at the cost of ~1 frame input lag.
VRR
FreeSync/G-Sync makes the refresh rate follow the frame rate — no tearing, no VSync lag.
How to Use
Go fullscreen
Click the canvas or press F; stripes start moving fast.
Adjust speed with ↑↓
Tearing is most visible at high speed — watch for a horizontal offset line.
Compare & verify
Browsers are usually synced; severe tearing should be confirmed in an actual game.
Sync Technologies
VSync
Classic
- + Fully removes tearing
- + Free
- − +1 frame lag
- − Stutter below refresh
FreeSync
AMD open standard
- + No lag penalty
- + Cheap monitors
- − Range varies by panel
G-Sync
NVIDIA module
- + Wide range
- + Strict QC
- − Monitor price premium
Fast Sync / Reflex
Low-latency combo
- + Esports focused
- + Lowest latency
- − Possible minor tearing
Optimization Tips
Cap fps at refresh -3 (e.g. 141/144) with VRR for lag-free, tear-free play.
Borderless windowed mode is compositor-synced: no tearing but slightly higher latency.
RTSS frame capping is more consistent than in-game limiters — the VRR standard tool.
Video tearing is usually a player rendering issue; enable hardware acceleration.
FAQ
Test Environment
- Run fullscreen — windowed mode hides tearing behind the compositor
- Watch the fastest tier for 10+ seconds
- Browser results are indicative; confirm in-game
- Enable FreeSync/G-Sync in the monitor OSD
